Since the passport was invented many decades ago, they have been used to travel all over the world, helping people see new places and meet new people. They are a really great tool to help people learn and have fun. Unfortunately not very many people know a lot about the passport. For some, maybe even most, people, it’s a hassle that just needs to be dealt with when traveling. Certain things regarding passports can be ambiguous – such as how to deal with a damaged American passport. However, there is some other useful knowledge to know about passports.

You might have noticed while passing through the airport that some people have different colored passports. These colors aren’t random, and they actually are very important. These colors are used to distinguish certain types of travelers. For instance, you probably have a dark blue passport. The blue passport is issued to standard United States citizen. It is the one most people have, and it’s valid for 10 years if you are over the age of 18. It’s five years if you are younger than 18. The maroon passport is another type, and it’s valid for five years. This one is issued to people who are on official business for the US government, such as congressmen, US military and their families, along with others. A different passport covers those who are on diplomatic missions; the maroon one doesn’t cover diplomacy.

For those traveling for strictly diplomatic purposes, the black passport is used. This passport alerts officials that the person holding is has diplomatic immunity. That is, he is free of search of person and luggage, he can’t be arrested, and he doesn’t need to worry about delays or detentions. These passports are valid for five years as well.

There is also the very unique green colored passports. The color of this passport actually doesn’t hold any information as to who the holder is. It is essentially a “limited edition” passport celebrating the 200th anniversary of the US Consular Service. Inside the green cover is a little dedication to Benjamin Franklin. Production of the green passport stopped in 1994, so you most likely will not see one of these being used around the airport.

Finally, there is a blue-green passport. There are two varieties of blue-green passports. The blue-green color encompasses the passports that are used specifically by those who aren’t complete US citizens. The Travel Document, also called the Refugee Travel Document or Refugee Passport, is one that is used by aliens that are refugees or asylees. When someone is a refugee, that means that they fear any sort of persecution in their country, and have fled as a result. An asylee is similar. They are people who are either totally unable to return to their home country, or they are simply unwilling to. The Reentry Permit is the other type of blue-green passport. This is used by permanent resident aliens who are simply trying to get back into the country from traveling. There is a lot more to learn about passports than just what’s listed here.
